Advantages of Extended School Days

Would you like your children to attend school for eight hours straight, five days a week? It may sound a bit excessive to some parents. However, there are some school districts that have implemented an extended school day. It turns out that there are several benefits to doing so. Extended school days, which are also called extended learning time, have gained popularity within charter schools. Some charter schools may have a bit more freedom about how long their school day runs than some public schools do. That doesn’t mean it would be impossible for an extended school day to be … Continue reading

St. Patrick’s Day Foods

With St. Patrick’s Day fast approaching, I have been thinking about and craving some delicious Irish food. Irish food is delicious at any time of year, and this week you can most likely find some of your favorites on sale at the grocery store or on special at restaurants. What kinds of things do people enjoy eating on St. Patrick’s Day? The most popular food on St. Patrick’s Day is the traditional boiled dinner of corned beef and cabbage. It is easy to make, hearty, and delicious. Many people make it in a slow cooker, but it can be prepared … Continue reading

A Little Sleep Makes a Huge Difference

It’s amazing the difference one bad night of sleep can have on my mommying skills versus a good one. The night before last was very very bad. Last night was a good, or I should say, typical night for me and my newborn. Did you know that the definition for “sleeping through the night” is actually 5 hours of consecutive sleep by a baby? Some parents fool themselves into thinking that a baby should be sleeping through the night when their other mommy friends brag about their super sleeping babies. But, we have to be careful to define what they … Continue reading

I Need My Sundays

You really don’t realize how important it is to attend church every Sunday until you have to miss one or two or even more than that. I recently had my third child, and despite my church responsibilities, I took a few weeks off from church before returning. The thing about missing church is that you don’t really realize the difference attending every week makes in your life until you go back. This is one reason why I feel that it really is easy to go inactive and stay that way. You don’t think church makes a difference in your life … Continue reading

Black Friday

It’s Black Friday, you know what that means, Christmas shopping! When I was married I was always done my Christmas shopping by Thanksgiving. Once I got divorced time and money were both tight so it seemed like it all had to wait until the last minute. I went shopping today, the crowds were awful, and there really isn’t any holiday spirit when people are fighting over bargains. I got the things I needed in record time. I knew what I wanted and got it done. It is wonderful now to be able to go shopping while Hailey works instead of … Continue reading

Differences in Traditions

My husband grew up in a home where Christmas was celebrated to the max. There were piles of presents, tons of goodies, and a lot going on all the time. I grew up in a home where money was super-tight, and Christmas was, by societal standards, pretty small. As adults, my husband doesn’t really care much for presents or personal belongings. I, on the other hand, go through a kind of holiday guilt, wondering if I got my children “enough.” I buy, bring home, wrap, and nearly always tuck something away for a birthday or later Christmas, realizing I over-shopped … Continue reading

Prepping for the Holiday Greeting Card Photo Shoot

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… as long as you are not in charge of shooting the family photo for the annual holiday greeting card. Having to come up with a decent shot that doesn’t make your family look like a motley crew isn’t easy, especially if you are working with a group of antsy kids, who rather have their fingers turn into stalks of broccoli, than pose for a holiday picture. If you are looking for ways to preserve your sanity during the dreaded holiday card photo shoot, then consider the following tips: 1. Don’t shoot when … Continue reading

A Schedule Can Make All the Difference

Every Wednesday I get my assignments for one of my freelance writing jobs. All of the work is due in one week. Now that might sound like a lot of time but I have learned that I need to build into that week a schedule which makes completing the work doable. A schedule is pretty much a must have for anyone who does work at home. If you try to tackle things at whim you are going to find some things in your life being neglected. It is really hard to stay balanced and keep yourself on task without a … Continue reading

Allow for Differences

Just recently I’ve been struck again by how often Christians compare themselves with other Christians. Sometimes it is to our detriment. We feel we are not as gifted, as spiritual, as friendly, as prayerful or serving as much as they are. We might feel their prayers are being answered, while ours are not. But perhaps the problem could be more than we are not listening to or liking the answer we’re getting. Just because God answered someone else a certain way in a certain situation does not necessarily mean He is obliged to answer us the same way. What is … Continue reading
