The DIY Water Cat

Ever since I started incorporating viral animal emails into my blogs, my sister's always on the lookout for ones that'll especially tickle me. She hit the nail on the head today with a forward she sent me entitled "Water Leak."

Her message preceding the "story" was: "I DON'T want to give them any ideas, but..."

Then the forwarded part of the joke followed:

Jennifer and Jim kept getting huge water bills, they knew beyond a doubt that the bills weren't representative of their actual usage, and no matter how much they tried to conserve the high bills continued. Although they could see nothing wrong they had everything checked for leaks or problems: first the water meter then the pipes outdoor and indoor, underground, taps, toilet washer etc. All to no avail. One day Jim was home in bed sick but kept hearing water running downstairs. He finally tore himself from his sick bed to investigate and he stumbled on to the cause of their high water bills . Apparently this was happening all day long when they were not at home. Knowing that few would believe him, he taped a segment of the problem for posterity.

As usual, I was clueless at first. I thought she was somehow referring to our water heater that we'd just had a big to-do over and had to replace, along with some pipe work because the original was shoddily done. And the running joke between her and I the past couple of days had been how I almost jinxed a project she was working on and hoping to complete quickly by saying, "Famous last words," right before she started it.

So I thought she'd stumbled across something about a water heater recall, or watch out for plumbers suckering you with some kind of leak scam (our water heater had been leaking), but the email had nothing to do with that.

Instead, the "them" she was referring to was our cats. Which became obvious the moment I clicked the attached link, which took me to a video of what was behind Jim's high water bills. (To see it, click here.)

Ah, yes, a water-curious cat was the culprit. Mr. Meow is one of those. He loves drinking from the shower after I've cleaned up in the mornings and often sits in front of either the sink's faucet or the tub's for us to turn on the tap for him.

But he either hasn't learned to DIY or realizes how well he has us trained. Unlike this cat featured in the viral email. Why depend on people for fresh running water when you got paws all your own to do-it-yourself?
