The Top Pets Blogs of 2007: January – May

Aimee and I, along with the occasional guest blogger, tried our best to bring you informative, interesting, and entertaining articles this past year. But you seemed to like some more than others. So I decided to do a Year in Review recap of the ones that you responded most to. What Makes a “Top” Blog? Even though you all may enjoy most of the blogs we write, not all of them inspire you to leave comments or rate them. Those that received star ratings made the Top Blogs cut. January 2007 Top Blogs Assistance Dogs of the West and The … Continue reading

The Great Large Dog Road Trip

Success! After weeks of web surfing, emailing, calling, and questioning, I’ve finally found an apartment that is willing to take me and my two dogs, Moose and Lally. We’ll be headed west from New Jersey on May 7th. And there’s about a million things to do beforehand. Have to call the vet and schedule appointments for both dogs — I want to make sure they get a complete physical and have refills on things like heartworm preventative and flea/tick preventative. I’ll also need a copy of their vet records to come with me. I’m going to get one of those … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for Mar 26-Apr 1

Busy week? Afraid you might have missed something in the Pets Blog last week? Here’s your chance to catch up on what Aimee and myself wrote about. Monday, March 26 Monday was our Sunday. We took it off as a much needed day of rest. Tuesday, March 27 Mystery author Evelyn David graciously sat down for an interview about writing, Whiskey, and murder. Wednesday, March 28 For anyone following the trials of Tabby, you’ll be happy to know she received a clean bill of health (finally!). Thursday, March 29 Combining stories in the news with the theme of mystery for … Continue reading

The Great Large Dog Apartment Search

Moose and Lally and I are on the brink of a great adventure. We’re planning a move from the east coast (New Jersey to be exact) to the west coast (somewhere in the Portland metro area). We’d like it to happen some time this spring. And that’s where things got difficult. As if searching long-distance for a place to live wasn’t hard enough, I have the pups to consider. And there’s no way I’m leaving them behind! Lally is a boxer/shar-pei mix, weighing in at around 55 pounds. Moose is a German shepherd mix, way overweight at 105 pounds. We … Continue reading

Anatolian Shepherds

I had never heard of an Anatolian Shepherd until yesterday when I accompanied my friend Karen to the Nashville Humane Society. (Karen wanted to see if they had a photographer doing fund raising for them like the Josephs do for the Humane Society in Jacksonville.) Turns out the NHS does have someone who does that, but their events person was very nice and gave us a tour of the facility. That’s when I saw this big white dog who was desperate to get my attention. And when she did, there was such a spark…I just may have to take Wayne … Continue reading

Becoming a Multi-Species Household

Hard to believe it’s been eighteen months since I moved cross country with the dogs! A lot has happened in the last year and a half, which I guess is what makes the time fly by so quickly. I’m at lease renewal time, and have been talking with some friends about possibly sharing an apartment (and cutting down cost of living for all involved). Great plan, right? There’s only one catch. My friends have cats. Lally has become quite the kitty hunter since we moved. She gets such a thrill out of flushing cats out of the bushes around the … Continue reading

How To Be A Good Neighbor

Apartment living means we have to be a lot more considerate about our neighbors. Not that this is a big surprise to me; it’s just an adjustment. Moose, Lally, and I spent the last three years living in a house with a huge yard and now we’re living in an apartment with no yard and lots of people close by. So what makes a good neighbor? Friendliness, for sure — I’m in a totally new area and while I knew some people before I moved, I don’t know anybody here at the apartment complex. We’ve made friends with another dog … Continue reading

Moose’s Special New Trick

My dog Moose is definitely NOT the stereotypical German shepherd. I’ve had little kids stop me and ask me if Moose is a police dog, and I have to laugh. He’s definitely not the smartest of dogs. Don’t get me wrong — Moose is a loveable, cuddly, goofball of a dog. He just doesn’t seem to have much in the brains department. For the first few weeks I had him, he didn’t answer to his name. (He came from the shelter named Coyote.) He’s not the best with obedience and basic commands, but he tries. Sort of. Alas, now that … Continue reading

Chestnut: Hero of Central Park (2004)

Sal and Rae are two young sisters who live in a Catholic orphanage. After watching many of their friends get adopted, they wonder if they’ll ever get the chance to have a family of their very own. They’ve never known what it’s like to have a mom and a dad – their mom was single before she died, and the idea of having two parents seems a little odd. But when the Tomleys adopt the girls, they begin to learn what it means to have both mother and father. There’s just one secret they are keeping – they found a … Continue reading

Dealing With Driving Pains

Within the next month or so, I plan to be taking a cross-country drive. I’m relocating from east coast U.S.A. to west coast U.S.A. with my two dogs, Moose and Lally, and after considering all the options, we’re going to be doing it by car. In theory, I’ll leave New Jersey on a Monday and be in Oregon by Friday. According to the AAA website, the journey will take me a little over 42 hours. Splitting it up over five days gives me a little more than eight hours of driving time each day. Yikes! Driving is gonna be my … Continue reading
