The Sad (?) Tale of Gordon Lee
by Courtney Mroch | More from this Blogger
Yesterday my friend Kim sent me an email with a link to the website for 9 News, a news station in Denver, Colorado. The subject of her email read: "This is so sad." My heart instantly dropped, because not too long ago Kim had to put her dog Caddis to sleep. She still had trusty dog Rusty, though, so when I saw her email my first thought was something had now happened to him.
Instead, accompanying her link was this question: "Why do people do such things?"
I clicked on the link to read about a poor little Lhasa Apso named Gordon Lee. Well, that's what the note found on him claimed his name was. The vets that he first fell into the care of said he's not really responding to that name, so they're not sure that's even it. Oh, and did I mention he was found on C-470, a highway, at 4:30 in the morning?
According to the article here's what the note said:
"My name is Gordon Lee. I'm a fixed boy. My family has to move and they can't keep me. I sometimes shake and get scared. Please help me find a new family."
Definitely a sad story. Sad that someone felt the best way to find him a new home was to turn him loose. Sad that the Colorado Shih Tzu & Maltese Rescue, the organization that stepped in to care for him because they also sometimes rescue Lhasa's too, even exists. (Don't get me wrong, it's awesome that they do. But it's sad that there's a necessity for such an organization and their services. Or any organizations like them.)
However, once I got over feeling sad for Gordon Lee, angry at the bad owners who abandoned him, and disgusted at how cruel we humans can sometimes be, I started to see the positive in all of this:
• Thank goodness Gordon Lee was not hit and, other than being shaken up and confused, appears to be healthy.
• Thank goodness the person who picked up Gordon Lee even bothered to stop.
• Thank goodness they then thought to take him to a vet that might be able to help.
• Even though it's sad such organizations exist, thank goodness people pour their own time, money, and hearts into creating dog rescue havens like the Colorado Shih Tzu & Maltese Rescue.
• Thank goodness for the person willing to provide a foster home, in whose care Gordon Lee now finds himself.
• Thank goodness the news even bothered with this story. It's only through exposure that we have any hope of educating people about the error of abandoning pets.
• Thank goodness Gordon Lee's guaranteed to go to a loving home this go around. (The screeners with the Colorado Shih Tzu & Maltese Rescue in charge of fielding requests for him will make sure of that!)
