It requires a lot of trust to own a pet. Have you ever noticed that? I didn't understand how much trust is involved in pet ownership until all this stuff with Murphy's paw happened. Now I realize how many people and institutions a pet owner must trust on a daily basis. Here's a few to show you what I'm talking about. 1. Trusting Vets We trust our vets to administer the proper vaccinations annually for our pet's health. We also trust that the vet knows how to do this and that the vaccines they're administering are safe. When our pets are sick, we take them to the vet trusting they'll know a way to make them feel better. We trust that the procedures they recommend are really needed and necessary. We trust they're up-to-date with the latest treatments. We trust they'll take the time to consult with us about any concerns we have. We trust that they'll guide us in pursuit of the best way we can care for our pets so we can keep our pets with us as long and healthily as possible. 2. Trusting Kennels and Pet Sitters Because so many of us experience separation anxiety when we have to be away from our pets, we trust that whoever's care we've left them in will keep them from harm. We know they won't give them quite the level of TLC we would, but we trust that our pets will at least be safe and looked after. 3. Trusting Pet Food Manufacturers Prior to the last couple of years, I never thought much about scooping food into my dog or cat's bowl. Now every time I buy a new bag I wonder if, like with this latest pet food recall, the food's safe for my pet to eat. Gone are my days of blindly trusting that my pets won't get sick because of the food I feed them. But before all these pet food recalls? I trusted without question that pet food manufacturers were selling me good food to feed my pets. 4. Trusting Pet Product Manufacturers In the old days, you bought a pet a toy and that was that. They played with it, maybe even destroyed it (as all my dogs have been known to do), and when it was good and worn you tossed it and got them another. But then came the Greenies concerns. Along with the lead paint debates. Now I find my trust being tested every time I want to buy a toy, dish, or any other pet paraphernalia.
