Moose’s New Supplement

You might have noticed that I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about… worrying about… and researching things that could help my Moose deal with the discomfort of hip dysplasia. Ideally, I was looking for a supplement that included glucosamine and chondroitin and other good stuff like omega-3 fatty acids, natural pain relievers, and vitamins and minerals that promote joint health. I haven’t found a supplement that does it all yet, but I have found one that I’m very pleased with. How I found Moose’s new supplement: I was browsing PetSmart.com, looking at the different products they had that included … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for November 5-11

What did Aimee and I write about during the first full week of November? If you missed a day, check out this installment of the Pets Blog Week in Review. Monday, November 5 Paying Attention When Pets Act Weird Murph was barking like crazy, the cats were acting wary…it was very suspicious behavior, which I try to pay attention to. In this case the animals tipped me off to the cops at the across-the-street neighbor’s house. Out on a Limp Aimee noticed some odd behavior with one of her dogs too. Moose developed a limp during their walks, one that … Continue reading

What Else Should Be in a Pet’s Joint Supplement?

I’ve been comparing glucosamine and chondroitin supplements for Moose, seeing how he seems to be limping on his back legs lately. My parents’ dog Becca takes a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement for her arthritis, and it seems like a good thing for hip dysplasia as well. From what I’ve seen so far in my search, glucosamine and chondroitin are the stars of just about every joint formula out there. But there’s more than just those two things in your average joint supplement. So what else should be in your pets’ joint supplement? MSM (methyl sulfonyl methane) is a compound naturally … Continue reading

Glucosamine and Chondroitin for Humans

Over in the Pets Blog, I’ve been talking quite a bit about glucosamine and chondroitin for pets with joint issues like arthritis and hip dysplasia. But glucosamine and chondroitin can be helpful for humans with joint issues, too! Glucosamine and chondroitin are part of normal, healthy cartilage — the stuff that acts as a cushion between the bones in a joint. They are available separately or together in tablet, powder, and liquid form. Glucosamine naturally occurs in the shells of shellfish and is also available in synthetic forms. Chondroitin occurs naturally in some animal cartilage and can also be synthesized … Continue reading

Painkillers for Dogs

I was hoping that the warmer weather would bring some relief for my poor Moose’s hips. We had a cold snap a month or so ago, with temperatures down below freezing for about a week. I was happy because it froze all the mud. Moose wasn’t so happy because it aggravated his hip dysplasia. Now that things are warming up, I can see that Moose is still having trouble. I’m doing all the things the vet suggested: Keeping him off the floor and on soft surfaces to sleep. Making sure he’s warm at night. Helping him lose weight. Making sure … Continue reading
