Four Pets, Four Reactions to Stress

Moving is stressful for humans AND pets. It’s been interesting to watch how the animals react as my roommates and I go through the moving process. I have two dogs: Moose (a shepherd mix) and Lally (a boxer mix). They have two cats: Kachiko (a snowshoe Siamese) and Shiro (a big grey fellow). Each of the animals has reacted differently to the disruption in the routine. Shiro has earned his nickname: “chicken boo”. The move has sent him into hiding — he spent his first day in the new apartment squished into the corner of the closet. Slowly he’s come … Continue reading

How Annie and Cujo Learned to Use the Cat Door

You may or may not remember Annie and Cujo from the night Moose, Lally, and I slept over at my friends’ house. Annie and Cujo are a pair of rescued cats that belong to some very good friends of mine. Those friends decided it was time to reclaim their spare room. Since they moved into their new home, one room has been a catch-all for boxes, stuff they didn’t know what to do with, and the litter boxes. Months passed. Eventually, they wanted their spare room back! My friend Jen is quite the home improvement diva — she designed and … Continue reading

Historical Pups: Lewis & Clark’s Dog Seaman

Today the dogs and I had a breakfast invitation. We drove up to St. Helens, Oregon, a cute little town just north and west of Portland on the Columbia River. My friends Ken and Jen have a house with a fenced yard there, and they always welcome my dogs with open arms. After breakfast, we took a walk down to the waterfront. There’s a cute park in front of City Hall with a winding path made from tiles. Many of the tiles have quotes from the actual travel diaries Lewis and Clark wrote when they were making their way west. … Continue reading

A Tribute To My Best Friends

I didn’t realize today was Best Friends Day until I read Courtney’s blog — thanks, Court! What a great holiday. I’ll be calling my two-legged best friends later today, but for right now, I want to focus on my four-legged best friends. As I write this, I have a dog on either side of me. Moose is smashed up against my side and looking up hopefully for a belly rub. Lally isn’t in physical contact, but every so often she lifts her head to check on me. When I’m in the office, she crams herself into the space between my … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for Jul 16-22

Did you notice a skip in coverage of the Pets Blog Week in Review? That’s because last week was my big vacation (I’ll be writing about that more this week) with Murphy and Wayne. Thus I wasn’t around to post last Monday for the week before. But vacation’s over so it’s back to the grindstone. Looks like Aimee covered a lot of interesting topics. (And I even snuck a few in myself.) Here’s what we covered on: Monday, July 16 We swam with kangaroos and author/publisher/pet rescuer Dindy Robinson in Part I of my interview with her. Aimee kicked off … Continue reading

What Moose, Lally, and I Did at Sleep-Away Camp

Okay, we didn’t REALLY go to camp. But we did get an invite from some friends who have a new house and a big fenced-in yard. So yesterday I packed up the pups, two meals worth of kibbles, some chicken jerky treats, and hit the road. Okay, I packed a few things for myself, too… like a change of clothes. Lally had made this trip with me before — we’d gone up to visit my human friends Ken and Jen while Moose was having his overnight at the veterinarian’s after his tail surgery. She had already romped in the yard … Continue reading
