The Baby Boomers Have Taken Up Genealogy

The Baby Boomer Generation seems to have taken up a new hobby. They are becoming genealogists, collectors of family history, and keepers of the family photos. It is very likely that when this generation was much younger, they never would have guessed that this would be how they would be spending their time in their “old age”. People born between 1946 and 1964 are part of the Baby Boomer generation. This generation was born after WWII ended, and there are a lot of them. Hence, the name “Baby Boom”. This is the group that came of age during the rebellious … Continue reading

Home Blog Month in Review: October

As I sit here looking out my window at the backyard, the birds are hovering in the pine tree against a strong wind and steady rain. The temperature is chilly today, and the calendar reminds me that we have left October behind. October 1st Buy a Home for $1.75 It seems that the housing crisis has made some interesting news lately. Home Month in Review: September 2008 Has the weather turned cooler now that September has passed? Pretty soon, it will be time to get that heat turned back on! The Pets Blog Week in Review for Apr 30 – May 6

Good morning, Families.com! Last week we bid farewell to April and Hello! to May. As usual, here’s the recap of what Aimee and myself wrote about. Monday, April 30 “Aimee? Courtney? Where are you girls?” Day off! Aimee had lots of preps underway for her upcoming cross-country moving trek. (See under May 2 for more on that.) I had family in town leaving that day. We got back on track Tuesday, though… Tuesday, May 1 When I was growing up I was taught to leave a basket of flowers on a neighbor’s door to celebrate May Day. But I decided … Continue reading

What Your First Grader Should Know: Math

Unlike many other subjects, math in its earliest years is definitively concrete. The best way that I know of to get kids to learn math and like it is to make it easy and fun. It is okay to practice different concepts daily and continually return to them until they are mastered. Even after they are mastered you should consider returning to various concepts periodically simply to keep the ideas fresh. Since math is incremental, your children will always be building on what they’ve learned previously. * Counting and writing to 100 My absolute favorite way to teach this concept … Continue reading

Virtual Brag Book

I’m a parent, but I’m not on Facebook. So, if you want to see random photos of my cute kid, you have to come to my house or check in with this blog on a regular basis because I’m not looking to hop on the Facebook bandwagon anytime soon… or ever. GASP! Right? I know. I am a member of a dying breed. Everybody’s doing it, so why am I holding out? I’m waiting for Anderson Cooper to feature me on a show dedicated to non-Facebook users under the age of 60. I’ll work it like a virgin. After all, … Continue reading

Choosing a finance themed blog or two to read on a regular basis can be a great way to boost your financial literacy, too. Here are a few resources that I have found helpful for various financial topics: Kiplinger’s Personal Finance – A very well established personal … Continue reading

Pop Culture Classroom

When I was a kid in college I frequently read on the internet about classes in popular culture. My interest in popular culture, like most students, was always more intense than my interest in business, the history of marketing, or mathematics. What drove me to seek out these courses was that during my first semester I took a course on Woodstock. Oh yes! For one glorious semester I watched documentaries about, read commentary on, and listened to music from that iconic festival. This was something that seemed surreal. Somehow it always seemed that you “lived” pop culture but “studied” everything … Continue reading

Get Smart (2008)

Would you believe … that this is a great movie with a fitting tribute to the original series, but a refreshing look at intelligence and comedy all in one package? Get Smart is a fun film that combines intelligence, sight gags and physical humor blend together to create an entertaining film that doesn’t take itself seriously and doesn’t ask the audience to either. Popcorn Humor I enjoyed the original series when I was a kid. It was fun and it was funny. Barbara Feldon was easy to admire and aspire to as the smart, savvy and beautiful Agent 99. Agent … Continue reading

Old, New, Borrowed, Blue: What Were Yours?

It’s a saying every bride-to-be is familiar with: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. Did you have any of these things on your wedding day? If you did, do you remember what your somethings old, new, borrowed, and blue were? I had to dig deep to try and remember mine. Old I honestly don’t remember what my something old was. I want to say it was a handkerchief. If so, who gave it to me? My mom? Wayne’s grandma? I hate to admit it, but I just can’t remember. However, something does strike me that one of them … Continue reading

Consider Where Your Influences Are Coming From

As parents, we many of us pay plenty of attention to who is influencing our children and where the influences are coming from that affect our kids—but do we ever take the time to consider our OWN influences? Are they healthy, encouraging, and supportive of our single parent status and our development as a human being? When was the last time you took a good, hard look at what and who was influencing you and decided if it was healthy for your single parent lifestyle? As an example, I realized several months ago that while a few of my friends … Continue reading
