Author Lauren Carr and the Many Animals That Inspire Her, An Interview

My next interview victim –er, I mean subject—is mystery author Lauren Carr. The thing that struck me most about her interview is how ingrained animals are in her life, and therefore in her books. Lauren shared a bunch of wonderful pet-related anecdotes that elicited more than one knowing head nod or chuckle from me. Will it be the same for you? Read for yourself and see if you can’t relate to her life with pets. Courtney Mroch: What kind of things do you write about? (Genre, subject matter, themes, what have you.) Lauren Carr: I am the author of the … Continue reading

My Top 5 Animal Loving Role Models

For National Inspirational Role Model Month (which November is) over in Marriage I wrote about my favorite TV wives as role models from the 1950s thru the 1970s and 1980s thru the present. Here in Pets I’d like to do something similar: list those people involved with animals who influenced me to love and care for them like I do. 1. My dad, Ralph Mroch: My dad’s got to have one of the most tender hearts towards animals of anyone in my family. As I wrote about in Where My Compassion for Animals Comes From, I get my love of … Continue reading

My Life as a Pets Blogger, Part I: Claiming the Fame

I’m pretty reserved about telling people I’m a writer. (In addition to blogging, I also write other articles, short stories and I even have a book out.) It’s not that I’m not proud of what I do. Far from it. Instead, I’m hesitant to share my occupation when I first meet people because (a) I’m modest, and (b) you’d be surprised how many times I get this reaction: “Well, isn’t that a nice way for you to bide your time, dear? I wish I had that luxury.” A Better Way However, I subscribe to this one newsletter called Funds for … Continue reading

Where My Compassion for Animals Comes From

I’ve always loved animals ever since I can remember. Most kids start out that way, I guess. They love to go to zoos, watch movies or television shows about animals, or featuring animal characters, etc. But in some the fascination wanes and other things become more interesting. My love for animals remains constant. Not only that, I always stop to help them when I see them in need, too. Just yesterday it happened again. There’s a little dog in the next subdivision over who sometimes gets loose. He’s a friendly little guy whose nametag says “Luke.” I’ve spied Luke wandering … Continue reading

Irresponsible Owner Breaks Writer’s Heart (Again)

I was driving home from work yesterday and I saw something that had me pretty upset: a little white dog tied up to a car antenna in the middle of a parking lot. My first thought was: what a dumb place to tie your dog. But it isn’t just stupid, it’s irresponsible. It endangers the dog. Would you tie a child to a car and leave them there while you do your shopping or run back into the house for something you forgot? What makes you think a dog wouldn’t get spooked or distracted and try to dart out into … Continue reading

Watching the Buzzards and the Bunnies

The other day a horrible thing happened: one of the neighborhood bunnies got hit by a car and died. I didn’t see it happen. It must have happened after my walk with Murph, because I would’ve noticed the bunny body in the road on our way home. As it was, I spotted it from the kitchen window as I was washing dishes. I wasn’t sure it was a bunny at first, though. It could have been a piece of clothing someone lost. But when the first buzzard showed up, I knew it was fresh kill. The Buzzard Brigade At first … Continue reading

Norwegian Elkhounds, Fat Cats, and Grey Mice: An Interview with Author Pat Harrington

Photo of Patricia Harrington and her dog Have you noticed a pattern this week? I’ve been posting lots of interviews with authors who have some kind of animal connection. Either because they incorporate animals into their writing, have pets who help with their writing, or, has been the case most often, have pets who help with their writing who also appear in it. I’m very pleased that my next victim –er, I mean subject—agreed to do this interview. She’s been a bit of a role model to me these past eight years. (Ever since I first got serious about writing.) … Continue reading

How Wii Are Celebrating Pleasure Your Mate Month (Among Other Things)

In addition to Pleasure Your Mate Month, the Team Pryor household has other super September celebrations underway. Wayne’s birthday on Friday basically kicked off the fiesta. My birthday comes next, exactly one week after Wayne’s. Two days after that we celebrate our wedding anniversary. Four days after that is my dad’s birthday. Three days later, on the 23rd, the festivities conclude with Murph’s birthday. Phew! What a month. Buying presents for my dad and Murph is easy. Exchanging gifts between Wayne and myself? Well, that’s never easy. And complicating it even more than usual this year is our impending move. … Continue reading
