Common Pet Myths: True or Untrue?

Many of the “facts” we grew up hearing about pets are false.  For example: who hasn’t seen countless images of a content cat licking cream out of a saucer?  When I got a cat in my childhood I remembered that image, and left out a bowl of milk for him.  He sniffed it and threw up.  This happened nearly every time I tried to give him milk; even if he didn’t spit up, he never touched the stuff. Because it turns out, not all cats can drink milk.  Some of them can, but lactose intolerance is as prevalent among cats … Continue reading

Puppy’s Peculiar Panic

Someone’s feeling pleased about her strange behavior This morning I had a perfectly normal article idea picked out. Before writing it, however, I first took the dog on her morning walk. She proceeded to put on one of the most ridiculous displays I’ve ever seen her perform and I realized I had to write about it. Any of you with dogs likely have seen this before: your dog is having trouble doing its number two business, so it fusses a little at first. The dog takes forever selecting a spot to go, and then ends up hunched over in a … Continue reading

New Neighbors and Their Outdoor Pets

Three new families have moved into my neighborhood during the last month. All have pets. (Woohoo! More pet people!) However, two of the households have outdoor pets. Aimee’s not the only one who takes exception to her neighbors from time to time. Occasionally, so do I. Most recently Aimee had to contend with neighbors not disposing of their trash (namely chicken bones) in the proper place. Frustrating. I can feel her pain. One of our new neighbors’ animals is leaving some litter behind I’d rather he dispose of elsewhere, too…. The Outdoor Cat Apparently he’s made friends with his next … Continue reading

Wipey Feet

My dog Lally does a funny little dance after she goes to the bathroom. She scrapes her back feet against the grass: right, right, left, left. I call it “wipey feet” (as opposed to Happy Feet, I guess). The topic came up in one of the dog lover sites I frequent, and nobody had a definitive answer. Why do some dogs wipe their feet after they piddle or poop? No expert in wipe-ology came forward to solve the mystery. All we could do was make some educated guesses. Some folks thought it might be similar to a cat burying messes … Continue reading

Deciding to Use a Retractable Leash

When we had Budly we didn’t use a retractable leash. We had the regular, old-fashioned six foot nylon leash. Walking Budly I remember seeing the retractable kind of leashes when we ran across other dog owners. I didn’t trust them. (The leashes, that is. Not the owners.) Budly was a wild walking dog. He pulled and sprinted to get to the fences behind which he knew dogs lived. And if we were someplace where there were no fences, he’d sprint just for the heck of it. I barely had control of him on the nylon leash. I felt in my … Continue reading

My Favorite Pet Blogs from the Past Year

Below is a list of my favorite articles I wrote during the past year, often with an explanation of what made them memorable. Five Non-Cash Ways to Help Animals/Shelters this Holiday Season: This was my first article to have a comment left on it. Is It Ever Okay to Kick a Dog?: This was my first article to ever get stars. The BMK Fund: This practice is very near and dear to my heart and it was neat to have a platform such as blogging for Families.com to share it on. How to Put Your Shopping Dollars to Work Helping … Continue reading

Why Does My Dog Roll In Things?

I remember a trip to the park one time with Lally (this was in the few months when I just had her, before we found Moose). After a fun walk with our human friend Joe and his Bassett hound Cassie, Lally decided to end the adventure by rolling in something. I don’t know what it was but it smelled AWFUL. I dragged her home (it was a long and stinky walk) and carried her into the shower with me, since the apartment didn’t have a bathtub. Lucky for me, Lally only weighs around fifty-five pounds, so I could pick her … Continue reading

Going Above and Beyond

What have you done for your pets that pushes your boundaries? What have you done that you consider above and beyond the call of pet parenting? We all have our limits for things that are okay and not okay… what pushes your limits? I ask because my friend J. (who is an amazing jewelry artist) recently found out that her dog is on limited time. Cana suddenly became very lethargic and stopped eating. The veterinarian ran some tests and found that the dog was extremely anemic thanks to advanced cancer. The prognosis isn’t good — Cana may be around for … Continue reading

Creating a New Holiday Tradition

I’ve always been the traditional kind of girl when it came to holidays. I like my turkey on Christmas and my ham on Easter. July 4th always meant barbeque. As I have gotten older, I have found that some traditions are worth changing. I always thought that having a little one in the house would make the holidays more festive and don’t get me wrong it does but I have also found that when you have kids holidays can sometimes mean more work and less time to enjoy the day. So this past Labor Day I decided to start my … Continue reading
