The Pets Blog Week in Review for March 3-9

Aimee and I were busy beavers last week. In case you were too and missed any of our articles, here’s our Week in Review recap for your cheating (er, I mean catching up) pleasure… Monday, March 3 In Aimee’s first Diary of a Cat Care B&B entry for the week, she discussed her bulletin board she’s assumed responsibility for and asked for suggestions. Me and my crew presented “The Case of Who Cut the Cheese” after a stinky episode in our house Friday night. Aimee detailed the four most common worms in pets. Tuesday, March 4 Have you ever wondered … Continue reading

Why Murphy Likes Grommit

Not too long ago I finally got to see a movie I’d had in my Netflix queue for far too long: Wallace and Grommit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. In case you’re not familiar with the clay-mation duo, Wallace is a man and Grommit is his dog. But Grommit is so much more than just Wallace’s best friend. He helps Wallace with everything, from getting up and dressed in the morning to chores to helping run their business. Now normally I ban myself from watching movies with animals, but I forgot about this one exception. (Yes, even cartoony animals can … Continue reading

Watching the Buzzards and the Bunnies

The other day a horrible thing happened: one of the neighborhood bunnies got hit by a car and died. I didn’t see it happen. It must have happened after my walk with Murph, because I would’ve noticed the bunny body in the road on our way home. As it was, I spotted it from the kitchen window as I was washing dishes. I wasn’t sure it was a bunny at first, though. It could have been a piece of clothing someone lost. But when the first buzzard showed up, I knew it was fresh kill. The Buzzard Brigade At first … Continue reading

Do You Ever Feel Your Dog’s Not Living Up to His Full Potential?

I get both really inspired and really down on myself after I interview people like Beth Terrell or Joani Ascher. Inspired because they’re doing neat things with their dogs, like teaching them how to dance or grooming puppies to be Seeing Eye dogs. Down because Murph’s one of the smartest dogs I’ve ever had. I often wonder if I’m holding him back from living up to his full potential. At the beginning of this year I resolved to change that. I was determined to look into enrolling Murph and myself in a pet therapy program. Then my mom got sick … Continue reading

Cats (and Dogs) Do a Body Good

I was reading an issue of Woman’s World today that had a blurb called “The purr-fect way to protect your heart!” Of course this caught my eye. “Sorry, dogs, but when it comes to keeping pet owners healthy, cats win paws-down! That’s the news from a recent large-scale study, which found that owning a cat slashes your risk of a heart attack by 40% and reduces your risk of stroke and heart failure by 30% compared to those who’ve never had a cat or dog—and this was true even after accounting for other risk factors, such as age, blood pressure … Continue reading

Thoughts on Murph’s Pooch IQ Scores

I have to admit I’m a wee bit disappointed Murph fell in the Above Average category after his Pooch IQ Test. While I would have been thrilled if he scored even higher than Pretty Clever (at Smarty Pants, Top of the Class, or Absolute Genius), I wasn’t expecting that. I have to admit I was expecting Pretty Clever, though. Maybe it’s just me being a mom who thinks her son’s smarter than he is, but I truly think he should have come in one category higher, at the Pretty Clever level. Why? Because there were descriptions after each IQ classing. … Continue reading
