Unfaithful Pets

Once upon a blog, Aimee wrote about pets who prefer people other than their owners. I got to thinking about this yesterday when I was writing about my friends who have been adopted by cats lately. In both instances, the cats technically belong to other people. But they’ve adopted new ones, which technically makes them unfaithful pets. Or does it? Cuddles Cuddles is a little calico that really belongs to the people who moved in to the house next to Cindy and Michael, our across-the-street neighbors. But Cuddles has decided she likes to camp out at Cindy and Michael’s. She … Continue reading

You Know You’ve Been Adopted by a Cat When…

“You can keep a dog; but it is the cat who keeps people, because cats find humans useful domestic animals.”~- George Mikes-~ As I’ve mentioned before, I did not grow up with cats. I always thought I was simply a dog person because that’s what my family had when I was growing up. But when I went away to college, I was adopted by a couple of cats. I’ve always known I’m an animal lover, but a cat owner? Until Einstein and Sneakers came along and adopted me, I never considered that I could have my own cats instead of … Continue reading

Leapin’ Lizards! A Study in Pet Teamwork

As I touched on in My Life With Cats, I was born into a family of dog lovers. My mom’s never spent much time around cats. (Tabby and Mr. Meow have since seen to it that she’s become a non-cat convert though.) And she certainly hasn’t spent much time with both cats and dogs in one household. I’m well aware that it’s possible for cats and dogs to get along, but my mom’s still trying to understand how it is they all get along. It’s simply amazing to her that not only do Murph and the cats tolerate each other, … Continue reading

Celebrating Tabby

We’ve had Tabby a year already? It seems hard to believe. It went so fast! But, yep, we have. It was one year ago today that our lives changed forever when I made the snap decision to screech to a stop in the middle of the road and snatch up the little cat lying in the middle of the street. What a year it’s been! It started out chaotic. In case you don’t remember or are a new reader, let me catch you up to speed: First we feared she might be pregnant. Then we found out she was when … Continue reading

What Is It About Orange Cats and Dogs?

Tonight Murph helped me take a birthday card to Lady’s mom, Ms. Tina. Lady’s one of his neighborhood buddies, a little beagle who lives a couple streets down. While we were there Murph went on their screened-in back porch to check things out, but then he came racing back to the front frantically checking those windows. Ms. Tina figured he must have seen somebody or something coming as he was reacting like Lady did under similar circumstances. So I asked him, “Did you see something, buddy?” He looked up at me, wagged his tail, and looked back out the window. … Continue reading

Cats, Dogs, Pollywogs…How Is It They All Get Along?

As part of my New Year’s resolutions I decided to make an effort to find out what kinds of topics interest Pets Blog readers. So I posted a thread in the forum asking what you’d like to see from Pets in ‘08 and to my delight I got a few responses. Keeping Peace in Multiple Pet Households On of the issues people expressed interest in learning more about and understanding better was maintaining harmony when more than one pet –-same species or not– shares a house. In one of her replies, Mcmama remarked: “Having a peaceable kingdom is something that … Continue reading

A Very Meowy Christmas

Besides patience, all I wanted Santa to bring me this year was family unity. Which he did, but a little earlier than last night. Regular readers know what I’m talking about. The strife that besieged our house earlier this year when I brought home the little stray who has since become our beloved Tabby Girl. For a while it was chaos. Poor Mr. Meow had met his match and lost the run of his house. If he dared to venture out, he had to do so cautiously and be prepared to run if Tabby spotted him. His whole routine and … Continue reading

Murphy, Mr. Meow, and Tabby’s Dream House

Photo by Srgjan Spasik As you may have read me mention before, we’re moving. This has posed a variety of problems, from getting the pets out of the picture to showing issues. But it’s also generating some happy excitement as well. We haven’t even sold our current house yet, but that’s not stopping us from dreaming about all we hope for our new one. And when I say “we,” I do mean the entire Team Pryor clan. Murphy Dreams Of… A large fenced-in backyard. One with trees full of lots of squirrels (and maybe an opossum or two) for chasing, … Continue reading

Mr. Meow’s Bed Boycott: Finally Over!

Not Mr. Meow…I just liked this picture. It’s over. It’s done. Mr. Meow is back. The Great Cat Rehabilitation Project neared completion at the end of last month. Earlier this month there was even further progress when Mr. Meow not only dared to come upstairs again but resumed shower buddy time with me. There was only one thing left he needed to do to let me know all was copasetic in the Team Pryor household again: snuggle buggle bedtime. This past Sunday night saw that happen. Wayne and I were settled in, lights off, and I was watching something on … Continue reading

The Tabby and Mr. Meow Saga: Huge Strides!

Could it be…? Is it possible…? Is that Mr. Meow I spy somewhere other than the leather chair? It started about two weeks ago, when Mr. Meow dared to get off his leather chair and venture into other parts of the house. (See: Yes, Virginia, It Is Possible for Cats and Dogs to Get Along.) First he grew comfortable negotiating the kitchen scene again. As I wrote about in the above referenced article, he now jumps up on the counters to keep me company while I wash dishes or prepare dinner. He’s kept that up, making an appearance every day … Continue reading
